Japan consists of several thousand islands, of which Honshuu Hokkaido, Kyuuhuu, and shikoku are the
four largest. Japan's closest neighbors are Korea, Russia and China.

  • Honshuu(本州)「ほんしゅう」Main province
honshuu is the largest isaland of Japan. The nation's main Island, is south of Hokkaido across the Tsugaru strait, north of shikoku across the inland sea, and northeast of kyuuhuu across the kanomon strait. It includes the cities of Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and Yokohama. Honsu has frequent earthquakes; the highest peak is the active volcano Mount. Fuji at 3,776m

  • Hokkaido(北海道)「ほっかいど」Northern Sea Circuit
Formerly known as Ezo, Yezo, Yeso, Yesso, is japan's second largest island; it is als the largest northern and least developed most of Japan's four main island. Its weather is harsh in winter with lots of snowfall, below zero temperatures and frozen seas, while in summer it does not get as hot and humid as in the other parts of the country.

  • Kyuushuu(九州)「きゅうしゅう」Nine Provinces
Kyuushuu is the third largest island of japan and the most southwesterly of its four main island. Its alternate ancient names include Kyuukoku, Chinzei, and Tsukushi-no-shima. The island is mountinous, and japan's most active valcano, Mt. Aso at 1,591m is on kyuushuu. There are many other signs of tectonic activity, including numerous areas of hot springs. The most famous around Mt.Aso, in Beppu, on the east shove, and around Mt. Aso, in central kyuushuu.

  • shikoku(四国)「しこく」Four provinces
shikoku is smallest and least populous of the four main islands of Japan, located south of Honshuu and east of the isaland of Kyuushuu. Its ancient names include lyo-no-futana-shima, lyo-shima, and Futana- shima.
